What to bring
- All previous reports, in date order — the old ones matter as much as the recent ones
- Ultrasound, CT or MRI films and their reports, not only the summary
- A list of every medicine you take, including those for blood pressure, diabetes and heart conditions
- Blood thinners in particular — tell us even if you were told to stop them
- Discharge summaries from any previous surgery
- Photo identity, and your insurance card if you have one
- A family member, if the consultation concerns a decision you would like to discuss with them
During the consultation
- 1
History
What you noticed, when it began, how it has changed, what has already been tried. This part is the most useful and is worth the time.
- 2
Examination
A relevant physical examination, explained beforehand. You may ask for a chaperone at any time.
- 3
Tests, if needed
Chosen for your case. You will be told why each one is being done and what it will change.
- 4
The plan
The findings explained, the options laid out with their pros and cons, and time for your questions. Bring a written list if that helps.
If a procedure is planned
- Fasting instructions are given when the procedure is scheduled — follow them exactly, as an operation may be postponed if they are not.
- Tell us about blood thinners, diabetes medication and any allergies well in advance.
- Arrange for someone to accompany you home afterwards.
- Ask about expected recovery time and time off work before the day, not after.
- Ask for the estimated cost in writing before admission.
