What it is
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy treats large kidney stones through a narrow track made through the skin of the back directly into the kidney, under imaging guidance. The stone is broken up and removed through that track. Mini-PCNL uses a still smaller track where the stone allows it.
Who it may suit
PCNL is commonly recommended for kidney stones larger than about 2 cm and for complex or staghorn stones. It may also be considered when other approaches are unsuitable or have not cleared the stone. The choice depends on the stone burden, kidney anatomy, infection risk and your overall health.
Anaesthesia & recovery
Performed under general or spinal anaesthesia, typically with a two to three day stay. A nephrostomy tube or DJ stent may be left temporarily. Return to routine activity is usually within one to two weeks, with heavy lifting avoided for longer.
Important
Whether a particular procedure is right for you can only be decided after consultation and investigation. Recovery times below are typical and not a promise; every operation carries risks, which are explained in full before you consent.
